Lionel Messi has responded to recent statements by Kylian Mbappé, suggesting that winning the Euro is tougher than the World Cup.

With Euro 2024, Europe’s most exciting tournament, drawing closer than ever, French superstar Mbappé claimed that clinching the Euro championship is more challenging than completing the journey in the World Cup.

According to The Mirror, Real Madrid forward Mbappé stated: “In my opinion, this is a tougher tournament than the World Cup. It’s difficult right from the group stage. It’s a competition that we haven’t won in 24 years, a very significant competition.”

Speaking ahead of Copa America 2024, Argentina’s legendary player Lionel Messi responded to the comments from his former PSG teammate.

Messi told ESPN: “Clearly, the Euro Cup is a very important tournament with the best teams, but it doesn’t include Argentina, three-time World Cup champions, Brazil, five-time World Cup champions, and Uruguay, two-time World Cup champions. There are too many World Cup champions to say it’s the hardest thing. Overall, the World Cup is where the best World Cup champions are. Everyone wants to become a World Cup champion.”

This was Messi’s sharp response in an interview shortly after Argentina’s victory in the 2022 World Cup. Perhaps Mbappé is looking to complete his trophy collection in his career, having already won the World Cup and Nations League with France. In an interview with CNN, Mbappé said:

“I want to win the Euro. I have to be honest. I’ve won the World Cup. I’ve won the Nations League. That’s the only thing I think about. I really want to win this. My first game as captain, so it’s really important for me and it’s always important for the country and we want them to be proud of us. It’s another opportunity to make history for my country.”
