Fans have poked fun at Lionel Messi for appearing to take a children’s football match too seriously.

The forward was seen enjoying some down time ahead of the Copa America this summer, which will be held in the United States from June 20 to July 14.

Messi, who is in the middle of the MLS season with Inter Miami, is set to feature in the competition for Argentina as he looks to build on his World Cup win in 2022 by retaining the trophy he helped his side win in 2021.

He was recently snapped appearing at a children’s birthday party, believed to be a friend of one of his son’s, and taking part in a football match alongside team-mate and friend Luis Suarez.

Fans have joked that Messi took the game a little more seriously than he should have been, as footage showed him moving for space to receive the ball.

‘Messi’s even scanning and looking for space to receive the ball at a kids party,’ one fan posted on X, formerly Twitter. ‘This guy is not a normal.’

‘See his eyes still on the ball!!! My Goat,’ another posted.

A third shared: ‘Messi’s scanning, Suarez is complaining. Muscle memory.’

A fourth, meanwhile, posted: ‘Messi came to dunk 60 on these youtes why’s he so serious.’

Messi and Suarez have been leading Inter Miami’s charge in the MLS this season, with the club currently top of the Eastern Conference after securing 10 wins and five draws from their 18 games so far.

They are two points clear of FC Cincinnati, who have played two fewer games.

Messi has scored 12 goals in as many games in the MLS for his side this season, ranking him third in the top scorers chart behind Cristian Arango and Christian Benteke.

Suarez, meanwhile, has also netted 12 times, though has played four more matches than Messi. He will not be representing Uruguay at the Copa America after announcing his international retirement.
